Please note: As of June 8, 2007, due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand, the U.S. has eased passport rules for travel in the Western Hemisphere.
Under the revised procedures, U.S. citizens will be permitted to fly to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda without a passport as long as they can show proof that they have applied for one, according to officials from the State Department and the Homeland Security Department.
The temporary rules will be in place through Sept. 30. Travellers will also be required to show government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license. Travellers who have already applied can obtain a proof of application by logging on to http://travel.state.gov.

January 31, 2008 U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling by land or sea across the border will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.
